What is Prolapse?

Prolapse means the repositioning of an internal organ out of its normal place.
There are many types of prolapses: -
cystocele (bladder sagged into the vagina)
rectocele (rectum bulged into the vagina)
entorocele (intestine bulged into the top of the vagina)
uterine prolapse (uterus fallen from its position farther down into the vagina).
What Causes Prolapse?
Genetic weakness
Pregnancy and childbirth
Hormone imbalance
Menopause
Increased abdominal pressure (chronic coughing, heavy lifting, obesity)
Previous pelvic surgery
What are the symptoms of Prolapse?
-
sensation of heaviness in the vagina
pelvic and low back pain
difficulty in passing urine
frequent urinary infections
the feeling that something is coming out of the vagina
painful sexual intercourse
What treatment is available?
Conservative options (see the Incontinence section) should always be considered before deciding on surgery.
A variety of surgical techniques are available. They aim to repair the anatomic defect and to strengthen the pelvic structures.
