What are Fibroids?
Fibroids are tumours, usually benign, that develop on the inside or outside lining of the uterus, or within its muscular wall.
Up to 25% of women of reproductive age have fibroids.
What are the symptoms of Fibroids?
Most of women with fibroids have no symptoms at all.
However fibroids can cause:
- Heavy and/or lengthy periods
- irregular or painful periods
- a sensation of pressure in the back, bowel and bladder
- frequent urination
- a lump in the lower abdomen
- constipation
- bloating
What are the complications of Fibroids?
Complications can include:
- Anemia, by excessive menstral blood loss
- Infertility, by blocking the fallopian tubes (primary infertility).
- Miscarriage and premature birth
Fibroids may also prevent implantation and growth of an embryo.
What is the treatment fro Fibroids?
Usually fibroids don’t require treatment but in cercumstances where it is necessary the treatments are:
Medical therapy (hormones) to shrink fibroids.
Depending on the location, size and number of the fibroids, surgical methods range from minimal
invasive procedures to hysterectomy.
